ABSTRACT

The interaction between a pregnant mother and her developing baby are numerous and varied ranging from the food she eats to the kicks of the baby that she feels. What the developing baby feeds on goes a long way in determining its state of health at birth. For a pregnant mother to eat healthfully, she needs to have adequate knowledge of the different component of food. But if the knowledge is not put in practice, it becomes meaningless. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude of dietary practices among pregnant women in Onitsha North And South Local Government Area Of Anambra State. Descriptive design was used for the study. 200 women were selected using systematic random sampling technique. Data was collected using a self structured and validated questionnaire. Analysis was done using frequency distribution, simple percentages and inferential statistics of chi-square was used to test hypotheses at 5% level of significance. Among the factors that impede good dietary practice in the population were cultural belief and poor socio-economic background while regular attendance of ante-natal clinic and good socio-economic background enhance good dietary practice among the population.
